The Newest nation in the World!

The Republic of South Sudan’s flag

Cheers, tears and rejoicing occurred across Southern Sudan as they were officially recognized as the newest nation in the World on July 9th. After almost a half century of civil war Southern Sudan’s independence is filled with hope and many unknowns. Some Sudanese that have been living in Northern Sudan but are from the South are now faced with uncertainty regarding whether or not they will be able to remain or must apply for visas. South Sudan, under the leadership of Salva Kiir must now try and build a nation from “the basement up”, a daunting task after so many years of war. The Republic of South Sudan is rich in resources, but lacks the infrastructure to access them, and the North is mourning the loss of over 80% of their oil revenue which went with the newest nation. Sudan celebrates becoming a new nation but the battle for peace still remains.

There are some amazing pictures of the event that are available on the BBC website and an excellent article on AllAfrica.com regarding the events of the independence if you want more information. Let’s keep praying for this newest nation!
