Right now we are almost halfway through with a two week training course that is called PILAT or Program In Language Training. In this program we are learning language learning techniques but also training our ears and tongues to listen for unique sounds. Here is one activity we had we thought you might want to participate with us. Here is what to do:
1) The instructor will say two words twice (for example ball….boll..<then she will say again>..ball…boll). Each set of words will be separated by a number.
2) Listen to each set of words and determine if the words are the same or different.
Here are your “clues” none of these involve tonal differences only consonant shifts if there is a difference.
Are you brave enough to post your answers below in the comments? To post your answers just write 16-20 and whether the set of words is the same or different…and if your really brave why.
Good language learners are willing to make big mistakes are you?
Don’t cheat but once you’ve made your guess click here for the answers!
OK,…here is my “guess”
16 the sounds are different
17 the sounds are different
18-20 each set of sounds are the same for that number
16 – difference
17- difference
18- difference
19- difference
20- same
16 s d first syllable
17.k g second syllable
18. s j second
19.same
20. s d first
This is very interesting as we are discovering Jessica to be dyslexic, and her lack of phonemic awareness being a cause.
Praying all your ears have good phonemic awareness!
16-18 different
19-20 same
16 was different, I think began with Sav or Dav
17 was different, middle sylable was Ka or Ga sounds
18 different, started with Sa or Ja
19 and 20 sounded the same to me.
